Case Study: Designing the Digital Cosmos
Project: SpaceTrader UI/UX & Brand Digitalization
Focus: Visual Systems, Information Architecture, E-commerce UX

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
The primary hurdle was visual clutter. Space Center Houston carries thousands of disparate SKUs—from neon-colored plush toys to matte-black technical models. The design challenge was to build a “containment system” that felt cohesive, premium, and inherently “NASA” without the website feeling like a chaotic souvenir bin.
UI/UX ARCHITECTURE: THE “MISSION-DRIVEN” GRID
We moved away from a standard product feed in favor of a Modular Grid System. This allows the brand to feature high-interest collections through varying tile sizes, creating a visual rhythm that guides the eye. SpaceTrader’s mobile UX was designed with a “Thumb-First” approach. Sticky Header: Keeps the “Mini-Cart” and “Search” accessible at all times during a deep scroll.
DESIGN IMPACT
Visual Consistency: Successfully unified over 15+ disparate “sub-brands” (LEGO, Build-A-Bear, Alpha Industries) under a single, cohesive NASA design language. Conversion via Clarity: By stripping away unnecessary “space-themed” textures and focusing on clean product photography, the design increased trust and reduced checkout abandonment.
